SETX Mavericks sweep 2011 ABA Awards - almost - Apr 6, 2011 The American Basketball Association announced its post-season awards for outstanding performances and it was a virtual clean sweep for the ABA Championship team, the SETX Mavericks, which won their second straight ABA title last week. 'This is an outstanding team and an outstanding organization,' stated ABA COO Dick Packer . 'They did it right on and off the court and certainly deserve the recognition. The only award they didn't receive is ABA Rookie of the Year and that went to a remarkable young player from the runner-up Gulf Coast Flash.' The awards: ABA Coach of the Year: Steve Tucker , SETX Mavericks, who has now won the award three years in a row. ABA Most Valuable Player: Odell Bradley (6'4''-F/G-81, agency: Tank Sports, college: IUPUI), SETX Mavericks, the third straight Mav's player to win the award. ABA Finals Four MVP: P.J. Couisnard (6'4''-G/F-84, agency: Laszlo Vinko Services, college: Wichita St.), who joined two other Mav's players on the Final Four All Star team. ABA Executive of the Year: Jerry Nelson, now a two-time winner of the award. ABA Team of the Yeat: Southeast Texas Mavericks who compiiled a 36-1 record and a 28 game winning streak. ABA Rookie of the Year: Freeman Taylor (6'6''-F-81, college: Robert Morris), Gulf Coast Flash, an ABA All-Star with NBA potential. 'While SETX won most of the awards,' added Packer. 'there were some really outstanding performances around the league and the voting was close in several of the categories. Jacksonville, East Kentucky, Colorado, Seven Cities had extraordinary seasons on the court, and off the court, many teams did some remarkable things including, but not limited to East Bay, Lake Michigan, West Virginia, San Diego, Savannah and Chicago, all of whom had received votes. SETX Mavericks win back to back ABA Championship ! - May 28, 2011 The Southeast Texas Mavericks defeated Gulf Coast Division rival the Gulf Coast Flash, 109-85 at t Nutty Jerrys Entertainment Center on Monday night. It was Game 2 of the ABA Championship Series, that end 2-0 fo rthe Mavericks, who, thanks to this result, won Back to Back ABA National Championships. Southeast Texas went 4-0 in the ABA Championship Finals by defeating the East Kentucky Energy 122-91 and the previously undefeated Jacksonville Giants 109-87 in the preliminary rounds of the Championship Finals. The Mavs swept the ABA Championship Series 2-0 with a 114-97 victory in Game 1 and a 109-85 win in Game 2. SETX ended the season with a 26 game winning streak and with a 39 game home court winning streak. The Mavericks were consistent and dominate all season long as they were ranked #1 in the ABA Power ranking for the entire season and for a record 33 straight regular season weeks over the past two seasons. On Monday night as they have done during the entire 2010-11 season the Mavs got off to a fast start led by P.J. Couisnard (6'4''-G/F-84, agency: Laszlo Vinko Services, college: Wichita St.), Myles Thrash (6'0''-G-77, college: Stillman), and Jon Rogers (6'9''-F/C-84, college: Valdosta St.). The Mavs took a quick 9-2 lead. SETXs stifling defense limited the Flash to only 2 field goals in the entire first quarter and the Mavs led 32-10 after one period of play. In the second quarter Gulf Coast forwards Freeman Taylor (6'6''-F-81, college: Robert Morris) and Luther Suggs (6'5''-F/G-87, college: Missis.Gulf Coast CC) got the Flash going, but DeSean White (6'8''-F-86, college: Northwood Fl.) came off the Mavs bench to keep the Mavericks ahead with his timely jump shots. The Mavericks led at half-time 50-35. In the third period of play the two teams exchanged baskets as Taylor, Suggs, and Decarlos Riley (5'11''-G-87, college: Paris JC) scored big hoops for the Flash. Cousinard, Odell Bradley (6'4''-F/G-81, agency: Tank Sports, college: IUPUI), and super sub Desmond Cambridge (6'0''-G-79, college: Alabama A&M) kept the Flash at bay. The Mavericks took a 17 point lead into the final period of play. SETX big men took over the painted area in the final period of play to dominate for the Mavericks. The Flash could get no closer than 15 points and the Mavericks cruised to their second ABA Title with a 24 point victory to seize Back to Back Championships! Couisnard and Bradley each scored 16 points to lead the Mavericks in scoring. Cambridge added 15 points and Thrash 12. White chipped in 11 points off the bench for the Mavs. Taylor led the Flash with 15 points and pulled down 13 rebounds. Cameron Durr (5'10''-G-82) added 14 points for Gulf Coast.
