ABA MVP - Pete Mickeal  -  April 18, 2002
After leading the Kansas City Knights to a 34-5 record and the American Basketball Association (ABA) Championship, forward Pete Mickeal was named the ABA’s Most Valuable Player for the 2001-2002 season. The announcement was made today by ABA C.E.O. Joe Newman. Mickeal, 24, joined the Knights two weeks into the season as a replacement for Donny Marshall, who signed with the NBA’s New Jersey Nets, and made an immediate impact. The Knights were 26-2 after Mickeal joined the squad. The former University of Cincinnati star led the team and was fifth in the ABA in scoring with an average of 23.4 points per game. He also led the club in field-goal shooting (58.8%) and pulled down 6.7 rebounds per game to rank third on the team. In a victory over the Las Vegas Slam on March 16, he shattered the Knights single-game scoring record with 42 points; the old record was 37.

 ABA All-Star Game  -  April 16, 2002
Kansas City Knights won even the ABA All Star Game, beating 161-138 on Sunday at Kemper Arena a group of ABA all-stars, in front of 4,010 fans. The best has been another time Maurice Carter, who scored 46 points, including 14 in the fourth quarter when the Knights pulled away. But even John Ford, a 6-foot-10 center and late-season addition for the Knights, had a good performance, scoring 24 points

Kansas City beat in Final Game 118-113 the Southern California Surf on Friday night in the ABA championship game at Cox Pavilion. Maurice Carter had 26 points to lead Kansas City to the success, helping the Knights to extend their winning streak to 24 games in the season.
In semifinals, the Southern California Surf had defeated the Phoenix Eclipse, 93-90, and the Kansas City Knights beat the Las Vegas Slam 110  -  101.

KANSAS CITY KNIGHTS 2002 ABA CHAMPIONS
LAS VEGAS, NV, - The Kansas City Knights won the 2002 ABA Championship, defeating the Southern California Surf 118  -  113. The Knights finished the season by winning 24 games in a row, including the Championship. The Knights’ Pete Mickeal was named the 2002 ABA Championship MVP, finishing the game with 27 points and 10 rebounds. Mickeal also had 20 points and seven rebounds in the semi-final game.
The final game of the ABA season proved to be extremely exciting, with both teams evenly matched. The game seemed to feature the two premier teams this year in the ABA, with the Knights finishing in first place and the Surf finishing the regular season in second place.
The Knights three point shooting proved to be part of the difference in their win. They made 12 of their 20 threes. The Surf shot only 11 of 30 from three-land.
The MVP Mickeal led scorers with his 27 points. Teammate Maurice Carter finished with 26 points including five three-pointers.
Tyson Chandler had a great game for the Surf with 26 points, including shooting 10 of 14 from the floor and 4 of 7 from downtown. Oliver Miller contributed with 18 points and 11 rebounds.
The Knights finished their impressive season at a mark of 35  -  5. The Surf earned the runner-up ABA trophy with a final record of 25  -  15.

  Playoff Semifinals  -  April 13, 2002
Semifinals Pairings are Southern California - Phoenix and Kansas City - Las Vegas
In first Quarterfinal, S.California Surf advanced to the Semi-Final Game beating the Kentucky ProCats, 124-111. The Surf will face the Phoenix Eclipse, who had an impressive 112-97 victory over last years defending champions Detroit Dogs, in game one of the playoffs held at the Anaheim Convention Center. In the opther Semifinal, will compete the #1 ranked Kansas City Knights and the #7 Las Vegas Slam.
In fact, the # 7 ranked Las Vegas Slam had an easy win over the # 6 ranked Indiana Legends in their first round of the ABA Championship Tournament, 115-94.

  League News  -  April 12, 2002
After the of of the League Championship Tournment, the Kansas City Knights, the regular season American Basketball Association (ABA) champions with a 32-5 record, will take on a team of League All-Stars on Sunday, April 14, at Kemper Arena at 4:15 p.m. Kansas City closed out the regular season with a team and league record 22 consecutive wins. Those 22 straight victories are the most ever by a Kansas City professional sports franchise. The complete ABA All-Star roster will be announced at the ABA Championship Tournament this week. The Knights will play the winner of Wednesday’s Indiana Legends-Las Vegas Slam game on Thursday evening at Cox Pavilion in Las Vegas. The championship game is scheduled for Friday night in Las Vegas.

Southern California Surf signed guard Tyson Wheeler. Guard Stais Boseman failed to show for Sunday's game and has been suspended. Kamran Sufi, a graduate of Mater Dei who had been waived on Friday, rejoined the team Sunday but didn't play.
