The East wins All-Star Game
The West All-Stars were
defeated by the East All-Stars, 129-127, in the 2006 American Basketball
Association All-Star Game at the Bank Atlantic Center in Sunrise,
Florida. The West All-Stars found themselves down 20-4 early as the East
All-Stars stormed out of the gate. The East maintained the wide margin
throughout the first half and early into the second half, and held a
23-point lead at 88-65 with six minutes left in the quarter.
Caleb Gervin (6'1''-G-80, college:
Azusa Pacific) then scored eight points in the next five possessions
as the West outscored the East 32-15 in the final six minutes of the
quarter to pull within striking distance, and the time ended with the
East struggling but still leading, 103-99. The West team opened the
fourth quarter by scoring the first three baskets to take their first
lead of the game, 105-103. The East and West played even through the
center stages of the quarter, with the West still leading by seven,
127-120 with two minutes left in the game. The East then went on a 9-0
run over the next 1:23 to regain the lead at 129-127 with 37 seconds
left. With 15 seconds remaining, Gervin missed a runner that would have
tied the game. After fouling intentionally, the East's
Chandler Thompson (6'5''-G/F-70, agency:
Interperformances, college:
Ball St.) missed both free throws, once again giving the West a
chance to tie or win the game. San Jose's
Jason Smith (6'6''-F-77, agency:
Interperformances, college:
Mississippi) was short on a three-point attempt with eight seconds
left, but the West corralled the rebound and fed it to Gervin at the top
of the key, who missed his game-winning three-point attempt at the
buzzer.
Caleb Gervin (6'1''-G-80, college:
Azusa Pacific) was one of the best players on the court, finishing
with 24 points and sharing West high-scorer honors with
Bernard McIntosh (6'8''-F-80, college:
Cal.St.-Stanislaus) of the Gallup Talons. Former NBA player
Armon Gilliam (6'9''-F-64, college:
UNLV) of the Pittsburgh Explosion was named the game's MVP with a
game-high 29 points.
