Dawgs struggling to pay the bills - Feb.8, 2001
The Tampa Bay ThunderDawgs have been unable to fully pay their players,
staff, or debts lately. The overdue amounts were not disclosed by
debtors or the team.
ThunderDawgs chief financial officer Deb Belinsky confirmed Tampa's
American Basketball Association 2000 franchise has fallen behind in its
rent payments to the Bayfront Center, plus still owes money to the
Heritage Holiday Inn in St. Petersburg. The hotel housed the players
until they moved out less than a month ago.
Belinsky said the players only received half of their latest checks and
the organization is hopeful that Arthur Blackwell II, who is in the
process of becoming the new owner, will pay those overdue bills.
The ABA is back !!
A group of American investors officially communicated that a new version
of the American Basketball Association, the league which invented the
three points shot and the blue-red-white ball and then merged with NBA,
will start in 2000 with a 40-games schedule per each team. Franchises of
new ABA-2000 will be located in target markets, like New York, Chicago,
Anaheim, Jacksonville, Tampa Bay, Pittsburgh, Raleigh-Durham, New
Orleans, Tidewater, Hartford, Nashville. The league spokesmen announced
some rule innovations, exactly as at the beginnings of the "old" ABA in
the sixties, but did not specified them. Let' s see..
