Rio Grande Valley Vipers Capture 2012-13 NBA Develpoment League - Apr 28, 2013
The Rio Grande Valley Vipers defeated the Santa Cruz Warriors 102-91 to capture the 2012-13 NBA Development League Championship for the second time in four seasons. The Vipers were led by D.J. Kennedy (6'6''-G/F-89, agency: Interperformances, college: St.John's)'s game-high 27 points to go with seven rebounds and six assists, while Glen Rice (6'5''-G-91, college: Georgia Tech), Jr. chipped in 25 points and 13 rebounds. The Warriors' Travis Leslie (6'4''-G-90, college: Georgia) scored a team-high 16 points and added 13 rebounds in defeat. The Vipers dominated the first half, leading by as many as 17 points as Rice, Jr. and Kennedy combined for 33 of the team's 56 points heading into the halftime break. Santa Cruz was led by Jeremy Tyler, who was four-of-five from the floor, scoring 10 points in the second quarter. The Warriors charged out of the halftime break, outscoring the Vipers 26-17 in the period on the back of eight Travis Leslie points, his first of the game. Santa Cruz cut the Rio Grande Valley lead to as few as five points, 69-64, with 2:00 minutes to play in the third before settling for a six point deficit at the end of three, 73-67. Scott Machado (6'1''-PG-90, college: Iona) scored six points as part of a 12-0 Warriors run in the opening five minutes of the fourth quarter, taking Santa Cruz on his back and leading the team to a one-point disadvantage, 82-81 with 7:31 to play. The next two minutes of the game were all Vipers, though, with Toure Murry (6'5''-G-89, college: Wichita St.), Tyler Honeycutt and Kennedy connecting on back-to-back-to-back buckets, scoring a quick six points and stretching the Rio Grande Valley's lead to seven, 88-81, with 5:28 to play in the game. From there, the teams traded buckets before a Rice three pointer gave his team a 93-88 advantage. The Vipers never looked back en route to the Championship win. For Rio Grande Valley, Murry finished with 13 points and Mike Singletary scored 10 in the win, while Machado finished with 15 off the bench for Santa Cruz. Courtesy of: oursportscentral.com
Santa Cruz Warriors guard Travis Leslie named MVP of All-Star game - Feb 17, 2013
So much for his status as an injury replacement player. Santa Cruz Warriors guard Travis Leslie (6'4''-G-90, college: Georgia) caught a last-minute flight on Thursday night to Houston for the D-League All-Star Game after he got word he was replacing Rio Grande Valley's Andrew Goudelock (6'3''-G-88, college: Charleston), who was unable to play due to injury. By Saturday afternoon, Leslie was hoisting the coveted Most Valuable Player trophy. It was like a last-minute thing they called me, I came over. And I just came out here and played my heart out and had fun, Leslie told NBA TV's Jared Greenberg during the MVP ceremony after the game. Leslie, who was the first pick by the Warriors in November's D-League Draft, scored a team-high 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting, led the Prospects to a 139-125 victory over the Futures, and collected the prized hardware afterward from NBA D-League President Dan Reed. The first All-Star selection in Santa Cruz Warriors history, the 6-foot-4, 205-pound guard made an impact with his quickness and athleticism, and showed off some high-flying maneuvers, including an alley-oop dunk off a bounce pass from teammate Justin Dentmon (6'0''-G-85, college: Washington) at the end of the first half. If there was one player who stood out amongst all of them, it's the man to my left, Reed said prior to presenting Leslie with the MVP trophy. Santa Cruz Warriors coach Nate Bjorkgren finished up a morning practice at Kaiser Permanente Arena before heading to a local restaurant to watch the telecast on NBA TV. When he got home later in the day, he watched it again on YouTube. And I thought Travis played great. He played to his strengths rebounding and getting out and finishing above the rim, said Bjorkgren, who, although admittedly bias, felt Leslie deserved MVP honors. In nearly 19 minutes of playing time, Leslie pulled down seven rebounds three offensive to go along with an assist, a steal and a block. He was ready to play, Bjorkgren said. I knew he had it in him. The recognition will only increase Leslie's chances of earning a call-up from an NBA team. Six of the 20 All-Stars who played in last season's D-League All-Star game later earned an NBA call-up that same year, while last year's MVP, Gerald Green, was signed by the New Jersey Nets shortly after earning the All-Star hardware. Green currently plays for the Indiana Pacers. That's my dream. Hopefully it will come true. I've got to keep working hard, Leslie, who was drafted with the 47th selection by the Los Angeles Clippers in 2011, said to NBA TV. Like I said, he added, I'm just going to keep playing, working hard, being aggressive, and just play great basketball. Courtesy of: santacruzsentinel.com
