The Matrix went off the dressing room all charged up. They poured in 27 points in the third quarter to gain a 4-point advantage before the fourth period. GIE Maile Matrix exploded with 33 points in the final stanza and sealed the winning outcome. Derrick Allen, Hill Named All-Star Game MVP - Apr 16, 2013
It is said that trouble comes in threes. South All-Star sharpshooter Derrick Allen (6'5''-G/F-85, college: Valdosta St.) showed the West just what that means.
Allen, the swingman of the Georgia PRIME, drained a record 11 3-pointers in 23 attempts and scored 28 points as the South again defeated the West, 136-128, for their fifth straight victory in the 2013 UBA All-Star Game at Andrew Young Center on Saturday night.
Allen shattered De La Cruz's All-Star record of seven 3-pointers set in 2011. He fell three points shy of Jermaine Barnes (6'5''-G/F-82, college: Point, GA)' 2010 mark for points in the annual showcase and took home MVP honors, joining Lorenzo Davis (2011), Brent Jennings (2012).
Southern Generals forward Tedric Hill (6'10''-F/C-84, college: Gulf Coast CC) scored 25 points on 9-of-14 shooting for the South, who had five players with at least 16 points. They shot 50 percent from the field, including 17-of-32 from the arc. The extra year of experience again was a factor.
"I think it makes a big difference," said reigning Player of the Year Jermaine Barnes of GIE, who tuned up for Saturday's All-Star Game with 16 points and five assists.
The West hung around for most of the first half but a late spurt by the South sparked by Allen opened a 76-62 halftime lead.
Havok' Jeremy McCarty (6'7''-F-88, college: Oklahoma City) and Fresh' Jay Bowdy (6'6''-F/G-83, college: W.Georgia), the top two candidates for 2013 Rookie of the Year, led the West, who made just four 3-pointers. Bowdy scored 22 points and McCarty added 21.
