Vancouver Volcanoes win 2011 International Basketball League championship - Jul 3, 2011

Written for Vancouver media: today was the end result of 9 years of hard work for some of the staff, co-owners and players from the Vancouver Volcanoes- specifically players Kevin 'Pip' Bloodsaw and Jake Carlisle who have been involved in the organization since 2003; both players were a part of a group of guys who helped form the IBL with 9 test games played in 2003. Both players went on to struggle through three really tough seasons in 2005, 2006 and 2007 (seasons with single digits for wins)- so today's championship- was especially rewarding to those two players. The game was excellent with extremely high level play from Devin Uskoski, Jake Carlisle, Andrey Murray, Lawrence Blackledge and solid contributions from about everyone on the roster including 4 extremely key baskets from Durrel Nevels that seemed to turn the game from Edmonton's favor- to Vancouver's favor (Edmonton Energy led by 9 points early in the second quarter).

Written for Edmonton media: the Edmonton Energy professional basketball team makes it to the International Basketball League Championship Game but falls to the Vancouver Volcanoes 124 to 116 in a thrilling game. Edmonton earned a bye to move past the first round and in the second round- Edmonton beat the Albany NY Legends to set up todays championship game this afternoon in Vancouver Washington against the Vancouver Volcanoes. Edmonton Energy Head Coach Peter Sambu got the most out of his players and stuck around for the trophy presentation (for the Volcanoes)- saying 'this IS us next year' quietly to the IBL Commissioner- but in the end, the Energy team was satisfied with their performance for the 2011 year. The players not from Alberta will fly out of Portland Oregon to their respective home towns- tonight. Owner David Dorward seemed happy with the 2011 season as is Team President Rick Stanley and both look forward to an earlier commitment to 2012 giving them even more time to line things up in what they think will be their best season yet (the 2012 season and with games at the Go Centre).
