NCAA D2 National Championships Bracket 2011
Bellarmine 71, BYU-Hawaii 68: Bellarmine wins
Division 2 title -
Mar 27, 2011The celebration was on. Time to pose for pictures. The Bellarmine University basketball players giddily gathered under a national championship banner for snapshots they'll talk about for generations. The Knights had just captured the NCAA Division II crown with a 71-68 victory over BYU-Hawaii on Saturday afternoon in the MassMutual Center. 'It's a surreal experience', senior swingman Justin Benedetti (6'7''-G) said. 'I don't know if it's settled in yet. I know down the road we're going to be talking about it in 20, 30 years amongst ourselves. It's an amazing feeling. It really is.' The final hurdle might have been the most arduous for the Knights (33-2), who withstood a 35-point assault from BYU-Hawaii guard Nick Holmes (6'7''-F). It took senior forward Nick Holmes (6'7''-F) making the second of two free throws with 2.1 seconds left to all but secure the victory before a crowd of 2,906. The Seasiders (22-9) could not get a shot off before time expired. Perhaps it was poetic justice. Two years ago Holmes was in a similar situation in a regional final at Findlay, Ohio. He missed the front end of a one-and-one with the Knights leading 75-73 and 27 seconds left in regulation. They lost to Findley in overtime and were denied a trip to the Elite Eight. Now the final point of his college career had helped win a national championship. 'I went to the line, and Justin and Braydon Hobbs (6'5''-G) just gave me confidence, said Holmes, who suffered a punctured lung as a junior. Do your best. Whatever happens happens.' I missed the first one. I turned around and they gave me a couple of fist-pumps. They said, Knock it down.' Every point was precious because Bellarmine had four turnovers in the final 2:37 and missed 3 of 6 free throws in the last minute (the Knights were an uncharacteristic 15 of 23 for the game). But BYU-Hawaii also struggled, with five turnovers in the final two minutes three by Chang, who was named Most Outstanding Player of the Elite Eight. Still, the Seasiders had a chance to tie or take the lead after Jeremy Kendle (6'1''-G) made 1 of 2 free throws to give Bellarmine a 70-68 edge with nine seconds left. But Holmes blocked Chang's running jumper, grabbed the rebound and was fouled with 2.1 seconds left, leading to his final free throw. 'I told him it was just like another practice, Benedetti said. You're practicing your free throws. We have confidence in him like we have all year. It's all about trust. That's our motto for the year: trust.' Bellarmine appeared to be on its way to its usual second-half surge when it moved ahead 66-60 on Benedetti's three-pointer with 4:37 left. But the Seasiders, coming off an upset of top-ranked and unbeaten West Liberty on Thursday, got within 66-65 on Junior Ale's three-pointer at the 2:37 mark. Another three from Heath Gameren cut it to 69-68 with 11 seconds left, setting up the frantic finish. Chang, a 6-foot-4 junior, had 21 points in the first half. He hit 10 of his first 11 shots and finished 12 of 20. With Chang's threat, the late turnovers and the missed free throws, Bellarmine couldn't breathe a sigh of relief until the final horn. That last 30 seconds seemed like it took 30 minutes, Benedetti said. Watching the drama unfold was coach Scott Davenport. Six years ago he left the University of Louisville, where he had been on staff for nine years under Denny Crum and Rick Pitino. Now he has a college national championship to add to the high school state title he won with Ballard in 1988. This one didn't come easy. Bellarmine raced out to an 18-9 lead, prompting a BYU-Hawaii timeout. The Seasiders gathered themselves behind Chang's hot shooting to take a 35-29 lead, but when he went to the bench with two fouls with less than five minutes left, the Knights bounced back. They turned a one-point deficit into a four-point halftime lead by scoring five points in the final six seconds. Kendle drilled a three-pointer, then Hobbs stole the inbounds pass and fired the ball underneath to Benedetti, who scored and was fouled with nine-tenths of a second left. He missed the free throw, but the Knights led 47-43 at the break. Bellarmine had five double-figure scorers, led by Kendle and sophomore Chris Dowe (6'2''-G) with 16 apiece. Benedetti added 15, and Hobbs and Luke Sprague (6'8''-F) had 10 each. The Knights survived despite shooting 27.3 percent (6 of 22) in the second half after making 18 of 32 shots in the first. BYU-Hawaii was 17 of 35 in the first half but only 7 of 28 in the second. I'm just proud because the championship was earned together, Davenport said. That's what we preached not just this year but in the six years we've been together. When I say together, everybody thinks it's because we pass the ball, but we won this game because we defended well together in the second half. The season before Davenport arrived, the Knights finished 9-18 overall and 4-16 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Now they are champs. This has come faster than I expected, Dowe said. Everyone has grown together. This is probably the best moment of my whole basketball career, Hobbs said. Courtesy of www.courier-journal.com NABC Division II All-Star Game
