VIU Mariners take 2019 CCAA national basketball title - Mar 17, 2019

The Vancouver Island University Mariners men's basketball team is king of the hoops hill. The Mariners squeaked out an 85-82 win over the Sheridan Bruins at the Langley Events Centre Saturday night, taking home the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association national title. Guard Harry Fayle (G) led the Mariners with 25 points, followed by guard Landon Radliff (185-G) with 17. Going into halftime, the Mariners held a 45-38 lead over the Ontario college. The game went down to the wire, with VIU holding a slim 81-80 lead with 15.6 seconds left in the fourth quarter, but Radliff sank a pair of free throws to put the team up 83-80. However, the Mariners fouled Bruins' guard Jemol Edwards (183-PG) with 3.2 seconds left, beyond the three-point line, leading to three free throws for Sheridan and Edwards made two of three. The Bruins fouled the Mariners on the subsequent possession and Fayle made both free throws to clinch the title for VIU.

| Hurricanes Top the Mounties to Capture the ACAA Championship - Mar 4, 2019

The Holland Hurricanes are the 2019 ACAA men's basketball champions after defeating the Mount Allison 86-71 in Sunday's championship game at Crandall University
This is the Hurricanes 7th consecutive ACAA banner.
Roosevelt Whyley (198-F) and Jordan Holness (185-G) led Holland College with a 21 points each. Jeshua Becker (193-G/F) was the leading scorer for the Mounties with 11 points. Travis Adams (190-F) (HC) and James French (196-F) (MTA) took home player of the game honours.
Holland College had an undefeated season and finished first in league play. Mount Allison ended regular season in third place.

Three peat.
SAIT Trojans become the first men's basketball team since the NAIT Ooks (2001-2003) to three peat as Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Men's Basketball Champions with a 95-84 victory Saturday evening against the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder at Lakeland College Gymnasium in Lloydminster, Alberta.
The Trojans, ranked No. 3 in the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association polls, advanced to the finals by beating the host team Lakeland College Thunder in their quarterfinal Thursday 98-77 and then the Medicine Hat College Rattlers 112-96 Friday in the semi-final.
The Thunder, ranked No. 8 in the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association polls, passed the century mark in their opener 113-80 versus the Ambrrose University Lions while the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings were victims to the Thunder's high-octane offence 100-70 in the semi-final.
In the gold medal match, Thunder held a 25-23 edge after 10 minutes but went into the locker room down 44-42 at the half after Trojans' Ian Tevis (180-G, college: Red Deer) converted a three-point play with 1:17 left in the second period.
Both teams had a hard time scoring in the first half of the third period as the Thunder held at 53-52 lead thanks to a three-pointer by Indianapolis, Indiana native Darrelle Bacon (188-SG, college: Central Lakes CC) with 5:00 remaining.
With less than two minutes remaining in the third period the Trojans would go on a six-point run....a layup and jumper by Tevis and a layup by Nicholas Molina (185-G) to hold a slim 66-60 advantage.
Tevis would take control of the game in the fourth period with a three at 6:27 for a Trojans 75-72 edge and would follow with a layup 25 seconds later and then a downtown three at 5:20 to go up 80-72.
Tevis would continue the onslaught with yet another layup at 4:55 to secure the 10 point lead 82-72.
John Smith Jr. (188-G) would pick up the offence with back-to-back three pointers at 3:37 and 3:14 giving the Trojans a comfortable 90-77 cushion.
Tevis, a native of Kent, Washington, was not done yet, dropping five free throws in the remaining 50 seconds for a game high 35 points.
Joining Tevis in the attack was Smith with 24 points.
Ronald Bacon (203-C, college: Central Lakes CC) jr. had 19 points for the Thunder while Ryan McLaren (198-SF), who had 35 in the opener and 34 in the semifinal, was held to 17 points.
In the bronze medal match it was University of Alberta Augustana 107-104 in overtime against the Medicine Hat College Rattlers.
"Every one of these guys are awesome; I love them," said Trojans head coach Marty Birky (193-F) in a post-game interview. "Concordia made us fight for everything we got tonight. . . I couldn't be more happy."
For Trojan guard John Smith Jr. it was a "tough tournament," as he continued, "I haven't seen that triple teams like that since playing back home in open gyms. It was a gruelling tournament, but it was fun and so rewarding."
Names Tournament MVP Tevis said in a postgame interview posted on the SAIT Trojans website: ""It's my last year of college, so I had to leave it all out here. I played my heart out. . . I don't have much else to say, to be honest."
"I'm always smiling and having fun, but I didn't have that today. I was focused like I have never been before. . . I worked so hard for this."
Trojans now head off to the 2018-2019 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Men's Basketball Championships to be held March 13-16, 2019 in Langley B.C. and hosted by Langara College.

| Sheridan Takes Home Gold at 2019 OCAA Championship - Mar 4, 2019

The final day of the 2019 belairdirect OCAA Men's Basketball Championship wrapped up with some thrilling games at Georgian College in Barrie, Ont.
The gold medal final featured one of the OCAA's longest standing rivalries between the Humber Hawks and Sheridan Bruins.
After a tight first half the Bruins shooting took off in the second half of the game as they pulled away to win 86-70. Kahleek Bakari-Whyte (186-G) led the team with 20 points in the final. For the Bruins it's their second gold medal in the last three seasons. It is the second straight season Humber has earned the silver medal at the championship.
In the bronze medal final it was the Niagara Knights who pulled off an impressive 79-65 victory to earn their first medal since the 2008-09 season and third in team history. Van Hutchison Jr. led the Knights with 15 points and 17 rebounds in a double-double performance.
To start the day, the Georgian Grizzlies pulled off a big fourth quarter comeback to defeat the Redeemer Royals 72-65 in the consolation final. Daniel Martyn (188-G/F) was named player of the game for the Grizzlies with a 15-point performance.
Sheridan's Nick Campbell was named as the championship's Most Valuable Player after he earned 15.3 points-per-game at the championship.

| A Thrilling Golden Finish in PacWest Championship 2019 - Mar 4, 2019

The hometown crowd in New Westminster thought it was over.
Douglas College Royals star guard Courtney Anderson (178-PG, college: Clark JC) had just hit a picture-perfect jump shot to go ahead by 2 points with 1.2 seconds left on the game clock. In their minds, they were champions.
There were 1.2 seconds left on the game clock.
The inbounds pass was a perfect lob to Tyus Barfoot (196-F). He tied the game at 72 and sent the 2018-19 PACWEST Men's Basketball final to overtime, where the VIU Mariners would eke out an 89-82 win punctuated by a Jerod Dorby (201-F) slam dunk and take home their fourth PACWEST gold in five years in a game that became an instant classic.
The Royals rode the energy of the crowd in the first quarter, hanging tough with the top-seeded Mariners and ending the quarter with a one-point advantage thanks to an EJ Christie (213-F, college: Simon Fraser) and-1 layup. But many of the Royals' primary shooters struggled in the first half, with Courtney Anderson going 3-10 from the field and Josiah Mastandrea (185-G) scoring just once from the field on 5 attempts. Both teams struggled from 3, but the Royals got the worse end of the situation making just 2 three-pointers in the opening half.
Tyrone Asenoguan (190-G) was the best player on the court for Douglas in the half, shooting 50% from the field and racking up 3 assists. Landon Radliff (183-PG, college: Walla Walla CC) was huge for the Mariners in the opening 20, putting up 16 points and 7 rebounds, including a 3 in the final minute of the quarter as the Mariners took a six-point lead into halftime.
VIU maintained their advantage over the Royals for most of the third quarter, but down five with 3 minutes to play the Royals went to work as Dylan Kinley (190-G) and Josiah Mastandrea made quick layups. Mastandrea added a free through and the Royals and Mariners headed into the fourth quarter tied at 50.
The Mariners opened the fourth quarter on a 5-0 run after Cameron Gay (190-F, college: Spokane CC) was fouled shooting a 3 and sank all three free throws. The Royals took the lead briefly 7 minutes into the quarter on a Courtney Anderson jumper, but the Mariners led for almost the entire quarter. Anderson tied the game at 70 with another jump shot, and with 1.2 seconds remaining, hit the shot of a lifetime to go ahead 72-70. But a perfect alley-oop lob tied the game at 72 and regulation expired without a winner.
VIU dominated the overtime period. Tournament MVP Landon Radliff scored 7 points as the Mariners completely overwhelmed the Royals offensively in the five-minute overtime period. VIU scored 17 points to the Royals' 10 in OT and won the 2018-19 Men's Basketball championship.
Players of the game were Tyrone Asenoguan of Douglas and Landon Radliff of VIU. Asenoguan had 20 points and 12 rebounds off the bench, while Radliff put up an unbelievable 37 points, along with 9 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 steals.

| Vanier Win Provincials! Headed for Nationals! - Mar 4, 2019

It was a tremendous day for Vanier basketball as our Division 1 Men's team extended their perfect record for this year by winning the Provincial Championships which were held at Collge Brebeuf on the weekend. On Saturday, they took a dominating 97-64 win in the semifinals over the Champlain St-Lambert Cavaliers with Karim Mane (196-G) leading the team with 17 points and being named Player of the Game. Then on Sunday they faced the defending champion Montmorency Nomades and it was a very tough match in which the lead see-sawed back and forth and was literally in doubt up to the last second. But the Cheetahs held out for the gripping 73-71 championship victory. In the game, Nginyu Ngala (178-PG) scored 22 points and was named Player of the Game as well as Tournament MVP.
'Our Vanier Cheetahs Division 1 men's basketball team put their perfect season on the line today in the Provincial gold medal game against the 2nd place Montmorency Nomades, the 3-time defending Provincial champs and 6th ranked nationally. It was obvious from the outset that the Nomades came to play and would do everything possible to win another championship. The game went back and forth, and it ended with an exciting finish.
The Nomades led 20-16 after the first quarter and 35-34 at the half. We came out strong at the beginning of the 2nd half and seized a 49-42 advantage. We kept the lead for the rest of the period and led 53-48 after 3. We increased our lead to 7 points in the 4th quarter, but the Nomades stormed back and re-took the lead at 69-67. They still led 71-69 with around 20 seconds left, when Nginyu Ngala hit a huge 3 for us, giving us a 72-71 lead. We got a stop, hit one of 2 foul shots for a 2-point lead, and Momo then missed a potential game winning 3-point shot with a few seconds left. We secured the rebound and a hard-fought 73-71 victory, for the Provincial championship.
Nginyu Ngala was named Player of the Game and MVP of the tournament. Karim Mane and Josh Koulamallah were also named to the All-Tournament team.
In this game, Nginyu Ngala was our leading scorer, with 22 points. He also contributed 5 assists and 4 steals. Karim Mane had 12 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists. Chris Biekeu had 11 points and 5 boards.
I want to thank the other members of our coaching staff, Associate Head Coach Feras Saaida , and assistants Mike Flannery and Kazadi Nyanguila, for the great job they have done all season long. I want to thank Max Hanna and his great therapy staff, including our student therapist Ryan Boudreau, for the great care they have taken of our players. I want to thank all the Vanier Athletics staff, and in particular our Coordinator of Athletics Mai-Anh Nguyen, for their terrific help and support. Finally, I want to thank all the people who came out to support us at the Provincial championships, including many Vanier staff members and lots of former players (alumni).
