Sun Kings Win 2005-2006 CBA Championship
The
Yakama Sun Kings won their fourth CBA Championship tonight with a
111-101 victory over the
Gary Steelheads. The first quarter ended 36-27 in favor of Gary, the
second quarter was 29-15 in favor of Yakama, the third quarter looked to
be all Yakama as they had a 77-63 lead with about 5 minutes left, but
Gary came surging back to come within 4, 80-76 while the quarter score
ended 25-24 in favor of Gary. The final quarter was up and down for both
teams. Yakama started it out with a 7-0 run, but Gary didn’t give up at
all. They came right back and even took a 92-91 lead with about 5
minutes to go. The score stayed close like that all the way to the final
minute with each team trading baskets. Yakama took advantage when they
had a 101-99 edge with a minute to go.

Anthony Goldwire (6'1''-G-71, college:
Houston), he was fouled and sunk 2 free throws. That right there was
the play of the game. Yakama never looked back and built the lead to 10,
giving them the 10-point victory.
This is the second straight year that the CBA Championship was won by
the road team as Sioux Falls knocked off Rockford in Game 4 of a
best-of-5 series last year. Yakama won 3 championships (1995, 2000, and
2003) when they were known as the “Yakima Sun Kings.†The Yakama Indian
Nation purchased the team last summer and have been very successful.
Yakama had the highest average in attendance in the league this year,
ahead of Sioux Falls and Dakota. They were the Western Conference
Champions with a 4.07 quarter point average and a league-best 31-17
record.
Anthony Goldwire (6'1''-G-71, college:
Houston) was named the CBA Player of the Year and Head Coach
Paul Woolpert received Coach of the Month honors in December. As for
the Gary Steelheads, they’ve had their best season ever. They finished
as the #1 overall team in the regular season with the league-high 4.10
quarter point average and a 29-19 record. Head Coach
Jaren Jackson was named the CBA Coach of the Year in his first
season as Head Coach.
Randy Holcomb (6'9''-F-79, college:
San Diego St.) had received an NBA call-up and returned to the
Steelheads in time to compete in the 2006 CBA All-Star Game and was
named the game MVP. Congratulations to the Sun Kings on another banner
season and congratulations to the Steelheads on their most successful
season!

All-Star Game 2006 Alpha Bangura (6'6''-F/G-80) received 97 points in the finals of the
Dunk Competition, beating out Albany's
Jamario Moon (6'8''-F-80), who failed to make his second dunk and
finished with 74 points. 5 judges. David Jackson (6'5''-G-78) out-shot Gary's
Jimmie Hunter (6'5''-G-77) in the Shootout to take the crown.
The Western Conference All-Stars topped the Eastern Conference All-Stars
119-110 tonight at Qwest Arena in Boise, Idaho.
Randy Holcomb (6'9''-F-79) of the East's Gary Steelheads was named
the game MVP after scoring 20 points and grabbing 13 rebounds.
Team - 110 points, 57 rebounds, 22 assists, 8 blocks, 4 steals
Notes: The
Sioux Falls Skyforce originally had 3 players named to the West team
before the replacements. All 3 of those players were absent from the
game.
Rodney Buford (6'5''-G-77) and
Brandon Hunter (6'7''-F-80) left to play overseas and
Stevie Graham (6'6''-G-82) was called up by the
Chicago Bulls. No one from the
Michigan Mayhem participated in any contest last night.
Roy Tarpley (6'11''-C-64) had been named to the East team but was
unable to play because of an injury.
Alpha Bangura (6'6''-F/G-80) was originally supposed to play for the
East, but the Mayhem traded him to Idaho while he was on the Injured
Reserve List
