The team named New York City 524 captured The American Professional Basketball League title over the past weekend in New York. In Final Game, New York City 524 beat The The Rockville Victors 118-116. The Victors were on 17 game winning streak including the playoffs. New York City 524 shot out to an early 38-26 lead in the first quarter. By halftime The The Rockville Victors were up 62-59 at the half. By the 3rd quarter The Victors were up 99-90, but New York City 524 used their low post game to come back and take a 4th quarter lead with under 2 minutes left. New York City 524 would go on to win the game 118-116. New York City 524 has captured their first major minor league championship. Throughout the season the team has been a soap opera that has been almost entertaining and disappointing to watch at times from on court arguing to after game altercations to momentous deconstruction of winning teams. The team is complied of street ball veterans James Williams (6'8''-F/C-80, college: UMKC), Kurt Cuffy (6'7''-F/C), Perry Wilkes (G-80) and Finals MVP Aaron Collins (6'0''-G). Collins who had 32 points 8 rebounds and 5 assists in New York City 524 victory. Starting point guard John Hawthorne (G) had a double double with 12 points and 12 assists while role players Durell Watson, Floyd Potts, Arnell Milton (6'0''-G-80), Duke Perry (6'8''-F/C), Keshaun Lamatz (G), and Brian Graham (6'4''-G-83, college: Point Loma) provided off the bench scoring, defense, and support. Throughout their playoff run New York City 524 played some really close and hard fought games. They opened up the first round against the Roman Perez (6'1''-G-86, college: City Tech) led NYC Jaguars beating them in a hard fought battle. Then they hosted the cinderella Manhattan Pride who were up 20 on New York City 524 before collapsing in the 2nd half and losing. Then came the battle versus The Palmieri Jeans Destroyers and league MVP Fahreed Cheatham (6'5''-F-79, college: Lincoln, PA). New York City 524 held MVP Fahreed Cheatham to 8 points with Finals MVP Aaron Collins locking him up all game. And then came the finals where 524 would capture their first title over Rockville. The amazing part is that New York City 524 did this all with no practice, no tryouts or recruitment of players. This was a collection of New York City street ball guys who battle each other year in and year out. This was the brain child of Brian Graham who started a street ball team 11 years ago in Hoopland and named it after his birthday. Floyd Potts was 524 first team member along with Graham and has been with team from the beginning all the way to winning The APBL championship. For Brian Graham this has been a long journey to win a championship and now he can finally say he is a champion.
