PHOENIX shocks the Shock and triumphs in WNBA 2007
Detroit-Phoenix
92:108 (17:30, 26:25, 21:24, 28:29)
Phoenix Mercury wins the WNBA Final series of 2007. In the fifth,
decisive game over Detroit the team celebrated 108:92 win.
Cappie Pondexter (5'9''-G-83, college:
Rutgers) takes home the MVP award honour nailing 26 points and
grabbing 10 rebounds.
Penny Taylor (6'1''-F-81) top-scored in the last game with 30
points, while
Diana Taurasi (5'11''-G-82, college:
Connecticut) added 17.
Deanna Nolan (5'11''-G/F-79, college:
Georgia) finished with 27 points in the losing effort.
The beginning of the game shocked the hosts as they could not
concentrate on the game. Even the fabulous support by the fans had
nothing to do against 30 points in the first quarter from Phoenix.
The visitors stayed in front with 30:17 and looked more aggressive
in the game. The Mercury led by as many as 18 points in the second
quarter and led 55:43 at halftime.
In the third quarter the Mercury did not stop and led the game
throughout the quarter. They increased to 24:21 to make the score
79:64 after three quarters. For many of the spectators it became
clear that Detroit would not catch up in such a game. In a
back-to-back last quarter Phoenix kept the score for good.
Katie Smith (5'11''-G-74, college:
Ohio St.) nailed a three to set up the Final 108:92 win.
After the game the Mercury could not but scream of the win. The
Shock thanked the fans for staying with them throughout the year.
Detroit:
Deanna Nolan 27,
Katie Smith 18, Shannon Johnson 13
Phoenix:
Penny Taylor 30,
Cappie Pondexter 26+10 ast,
