Breakers win 2009 championship - Jun 17, 2009
The Santa Barbara Breakers defeated 127-118 the the Newport Beach Surf after a a 48 minute battle on June 14, repeating as West Coast Pro Basketball League Champions for 2009. Despite the loss of 2008 MVP Josh Merrill (6'9''-F-74, college: UCSB), out of the country with previous commitments, the other Breaker players stepped up their game to the next level during weekend play. Earning 2009 MVP awards was Mark Dawson (6'9''-F/C-83, agency: Tank Sports, college: Long Beach St.), who garnered 51 points 19 rebounds for the two playoff games. Dawson also set a WCBL record shooting 14-14 from 2 point range in the championship contest and was unstoppable on the offensive boards (8), while often leading the way on offensive fastbreak opportunities. Also contributing heavily for the Breakers in the two games was Tim Taylor (6'3''-G-82, college: Wayne St., NE)'s 35 points and 10 rebounds; Mark Peters (5'11''-G-81, college: Cal-Riverside) 34 points and 11 assists; Jeremy Vague (6'9''-F/C-79, college: Utah St.)'s 29 points, 6 blocked shots, 24 rebounds and the tenacious defense and 27 points tallied by Leonard Mosley (6'5''-G-82, college: Oklahoma Baptist). Helping 'lubricate' the Breaker machine, as he has done all season long, was Santiago Aguirre (6'8''-C-85, agency: Passing Lane, college: Westmont) with 19 points,19 rebounds, 7 assists and two timely 3pointers late in the second half which propelled the Breakers during the back and forth, fierce encounter against the Surf.
