D1 Finals: USCAA suspended Division I National Championships
- Mar 13, 2020
|
The USCAA, in cooperation with Penn State University Fayette, has suspended its 2020 USCAA Men's and Women's Division I Basketball National Championships. The USCAA attempted to make adjustments throughout the tournament including reducing allowable attendance, the presence of sanitization stations throughout the facility, and eliminating consolation games. However, the association deemed the threat of COVID-19 too serious to continue through Saturday. 'It is in the best interest of our competitors, staff, and fans to suspend these championships and reevaluate how we continue through the spring based on the reports from experts,' states USCAA Executive Director Matt Simms. In 15 years, this is the most gut wrenching decision we have had to make, but it was done with the health and safety of our people in mind.'

D2 Finals: NHTI Survives Penn State Greater Allegheny For Second DII Championship - Mar 12, 2020
|
Neither NHTI or Penn State Greater Allegheny began the week as a team likely to win the 2019-20 United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Men's Division II National Championship and that made the title game on Wednesday even more exciting. The two teams battled through 13 ties and eight lead changes and fourth-seeded NHTI rebounded from a four-point halftime deficit for a 74-70 victory and its first national championship in 15 years. The Lynx were powered by tournament Most Valuable Player J'Quavious Thurmond (6'4''-F) with 19 points and six rebounds. Thurmond played all 40 minutes and was the only played not to visit the sideline from the opening tip to the final horn. The Lions led by five at 14:08 in the second following a contested layup from Markel Sayles (6'2''-G). Joe Charlton (6'5''-F) later hit a layup with 7:14 to play as Greater Allegheny led by three, 59-56. NHTI, which shot 62.5 percent from the field in the crucial second half, took the lead for good when Jymir Thompson (5'7''-PG) hit a three-pointer at 4:32 for a 66-64 advantage. Sean Riley (6'4''-SG) hit two free throws at 2:02 for a five-point lead, 71-66. The Lions missed two three-pointers late in the contest that would have tied the score before Riley sank a foul shot with three seconds left to set the final at 74-70. Riley picked up all-tournament honors for NHTI as he tied Thurmond for the team lead with 19 points. Shaquille Barrett added 12 and Mustapha Koroma scored 10. The Lions were playing their fourth game in four days of the tournament as they advanced to the title game as the 10th and final seed in the bracket. Greater Allegheny emerged from the first half with a 39-35 lead thanks 14 points from Makis Rivera. The Lions led by as many as seven in the first half, including a 38-31 lead with 1:20 showing on the clock before carrying their four-point lead into the half. Rivera and Kenny Rouse garnered all-tournament honors for the Lions. Rivera finished with 14 points, while Rouse scored a team-high 17 with six assists. Koran Fleming scored 13. NHTI finished the season at 27-3, while Greater Allegheny's season ends at 21-10
