Seattle SuperHawks Cruise Past Salem to Win the Revived USBL's First Crown-Jun 8, 2026
The most dominant team in the United States Basketball League's comeback season finished the job in style. The Seattle SuperHawks routed the Salem Capitals 132-105 to win the championship of the relaunched USBL, capping a near-perfect campaign with one more offensive avalanche.
Seattle had been the class of the eight-team, West Coast circuit all year, storming through the regular season at 20-1, and they carried that form into the postseason. As the No. 1 seed, the SuperHawks earned a bye to the semifinals and promptly hung 150 points on the Yakima Heat in a 150-124 win before dismantling Salem in the final. The Capitals, the No. 2 seed, had reached the title game via a bye and a tight 89-85 semifinal win over the San Diego Surf, but they had no answer for Seattle's depth and firepower on the big stage.
The two quarterfinals had set the stage: Yakima edged the Vancouver Bears in a track meet, 146-143, and San Diego pulled away from Spokane's Lilac City Legends 100-85.
The title is the crowning achievement of an improbable storyline. Seattle's headline name all season was Jontay Porter (6'11''-F-1999, college: Missouri), the former Toronto Raptors center banned for life by the NBA in 2024 for betting on games including on his own team to lose and manipulating his performances for gamblers. Awaiting federal sentencing after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud, Porter found a basketball lifeline in the rebuilt USBL, and a personal one in Seattle, where he attended high school for a season and where his wife is from. He made an immediate impact, setting a USBL single-game rebounding record with 32 boards and posting a triple-double early in the year as the SuperHawks rolled toward the top seed.
For the league itself, the night closes a successful first chapter of its revival. Originally launched in 1985 and shuttered in 2008, the USBL returned in 2026 with eight teams up and down the West Coast and crowned the Seattle SuperHawks as the first champions of its new era.
